Jeffrey Gary, Ph.D.
Jeffrey Gary has worked for over 40 years, treating children, adolescents and adults with substance use and mental health disorders in inpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization and outpatient settings. He is currently the Clinical Director of First Step, a community based behavioral health program in Maryland.
A licensed psychologist, Dr. Gary is certified by the Board of Governors’ of the American Psychological Association College of Professional Psychology in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders. He has presented workshops nationally on topics in the areas of evidence based practices, substance use and mental health treatment, employee assistance programming and organizational development.
Gerald A. Fishman, Ph.D.

Gerald A. Fishman, Ph.D., is a NYS Licensed Psychologist and Certified School Psychologist with additional post-doctoral training in public health, chemical dependency, and specific therapy areas. Dr. Fishman has worked with clients across the developmental spectrum in mental health, chemical dependency, school, and private practice settings for over 25 years, and has taught at both graduate and undergraduate levels at colleges in the Albany, New York area. Dr. Fishman has developed and directed adolescent chemical dependency and adult outpatient co-occurring disorder programs in both upstate and metropolitan New York areas, and is the co-founder of the Human Services Consultation and Training Institute, offering statewide and national professional trainings in specific clinical, chemical dependency, behavioral health, school psychology, and education areas.
Dr. Fishman also holds post-doctorate certifications in Public Health, Chemical Dependency, Hypnotherapy, and Neurolinguistic Programming, and has been trained in group therapy, marriage and family counseling, HIV Community Education, and alternate evidence-based, clinical approaches to psychotherapy. He is presently the Associate Dean of the Master of Arts Program with a Concentration in Counseling Psychology at UI & U, is appointed to the Clinical Associate Faculty at the State University of New York at Albany in the School of Public Health, and also consults with regulatory agencies on both the state and national levels.
Dr. Fishman resides in Pittsfield, Massachusetts with his wife and family.
Rick Karges, LISW-S, ACSW
In his more than 20 years in the mental health field, Rick has had the unique opportunity to have worked in a variety of behavioral healthcare settings, in both clinical and executive capacities. At Hopewell what excites Rick the most, is being a part of residents' growth and following their success after leaving the farm.
Prior to joining Hopewell in September 2007, Rick was with Crisis & Counseling Center, a $7 million community behavioral health center in Augusta, Maine, where he was CEO for seven years.
He was recognized for his outstanding work in the mental health field when he was named the 2007 Professional of the Year by the Maine Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
Rick and his wife are originally from Cleveland, and in the mid 1980's to 1990's, Rick was Executive Director of the Lake County Mental Health Center and prior to that held a leadership position at University Hospital's Psychiatry Management Center.
Rick, his wife, and their young son live on campus at Hopewell.

Douglas J. Edwards is Publisher of Addiction Professional, having formerly served as editor in chief of Behavioral Healthcare and Addiction Professional. Edwards has been serving the addiction treatment community since 2000 in multiple editorial and marketing roles. Edwards will serve as moderator of the discussion.
