Robert R. Johnson, DO, will oversee medical staff and psychiatric services at Amen Clinics as the organization’s new national medical director, the organization announced last week. Johnson’s hire extends a longstanding relationship he has had with Amen Clinics, as Johnson’s former clinical staff at the Sierra Tucson addiction treatment facility was trained in the same neuroimaging techniques that Daniel G. Amen, MD, uses as a cornerstone of his organization’s behavioral health and related services.
Johnson, who served as Sierra Tucson’s medical director and is board-certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine, said in a statement that he will seek at Amen Clinics to nurture an environment “where clinicians and family members can refer patients with confidence that they will be embraced by a healing community of doctors who care deeply about that patient’s holistic well-being, and who can draw from both established and emerging methods to bring hope, direction, and healing to those struggling with psychiatric conditions.”
Johnson indicated that he believes a combination of clinicians’ professional dedication and the use of cutting-edge technology holds the key to helping patients break the cycle of recidivism. He also expressed excitement about Amen Clinics’ focus on lifestyle issues such as nutrition, exercise, and the practice of spirituality.
Besides his work at Sierra Tucson, Johnson also served as senior medical director at College Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Orange County, Calif.
Amen Clinics was founded in 1989 and has locations in San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and its home base of Newport Beach, Calif.
