Havre de Grade, Md. — Father Martin’s Ashley, the non-profit alcoholism and drug addiction treatment center here announced that nominations for the 2011 Father Joseph C. Martin, S.S. Award for Professional Excellence are now being accepted.
The Father Martin Award was first given in 2003 and was created to recognize professionals who exemplify Father Martin’s legacy of devotion to 12-step recovery and helping the chemically addicted, and their families, heal.
Last year’s winner was Donald J. Kurth, MD, FASAM and there have been six other award honorees to date. This year’s award will be presented at a special Awards Luncheon during the National Conference on Addictive Disorders (NCAD) sponsored by the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP), the Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) and the Vendome Group to be held in San Diego, Sept. 17-21. Last year’s award presentation to Dr. Kurth at the NCAD conference was witnessed by nearly 900 people. The 2011 award honoree will be invited to attend the conference to receive the award as the guest of Father Martin’s Ashley. An independent committee of addiction and mental health professionals will review the nominations and select this year’s winner. Father Joseph C. Martin passed away on March 9, 2009, after a 50-plus year career of helping fellow alcoholics, addicts and their families heal. He co-founded the Father Martin’s Ashley treatment center in 1983 and also Father Martin Media, distributors of Chalk Talk, perhaps the most widely viewed film on the subject of alcoholism in the world. He believed in the simple wisdom of 12-step programs and that each person deserved to be treated with dignity. Father Martin’s Ashley is a nationally-recognized leader in the treatment of alcoholism and chemical dependence. Accredited by The Joint Commission and located on a 147-acre campus in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Father Martin’s Ashley has, since being co-founded by Father Joseph C. Martin, S.S. in 1983, worked to heal addicts and help their families with the science of medicine, the art of therapy and the practice of 12-Step spirituality.
