This week I'm attending the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare conference in Boston, and a statistic cited during one of Thursday's plenary sessions bears repeating to those who advocate more attention to addiction treatment services. During an afternoon talk in which Kitty Dukakis spoke poignantly about her battles with depression and addiction, former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis mentioned the disappointing ratio of 0 out of 50. That refers to the number of "state of the state" addresses by governors in 2008 that made reference to the problem of alcohol and drug abuse. That's right—zero. If that's not reason enough to intensify the advocacy efforts that are going on in the field, I don't know what is. Visit again on Monday for more impressions from the National Council conference.
