Social media alchemy: Passionate readers turn 'hot water' into 'gold'

Reader response earns Addiction Professional site top spot among healthcare social media

As a group, addiction treatment counselors are known to be passionate and opinionated about their work. No one knows that better than my colleague Gary Enos, the longtime editor of Addiction Professional, whose readers not only read, but passionately responded—pro and con— to a controversial July/August 2011 article about a hot topic—medication-assisted addiction treatment. 

In response to the debate that was launched by critics of the article, the magazine’s LinkedIn site (“Addiction Professionals” at was flooded with more than 500 messages and replies and a surge of more than 1,000 new-member requests between September 1 and December 31, 2011, expanding the site membership to nearly 2,000.  Since then, the membership surge has continued, seeing the site’s membership rise to over 4,100 just four months later.

The remarkable reader engagement and response of Addiction Professional readers—not only at the LinkedIn site but at the publication’s own website,— was recognized May 1 when Enos’ peers—the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors (ASHPE)—recognized the Addiction Professionals’ group with its top honor: a Gold Award for “best use of social media” in 2011.

Congratulations to Gary, to associate editor Nick Zubko, and to the deeply committed and involved readers of Addiction Professional magazine. While the size of your professional community is not as large as some in the global healthcare system, your involvement and passion have certainly spoken loudly enough for all in the healthcare field to hear!
