Sobriety 101: Is academia the new road to recovery?

A recent article in The Science of Drug Abuse and Addiction notes, “Because addiction can affect so many aspects of a person’s life, treatment must address the needs of the whole person to be successful. This is why the best programs incorporate a variety of rehabilitative services into their comprehensive treatment regimens.” Sober College's program is based upon five core competencies: Sobriety, Emotional Growth, Life Skills, Productivity (academics), and Fitness. Successful outcomes are directly correlated to the “wholistic” nature of the all-inclusive program. Modalities that include counseling, 12-Step meetings, gym visits and creative projects work hand in hand, addressing the brain, body and spirit simultaneously. This is a perfect recipe for recovery.

The recovery menu at Sober College provides a variety of effective interventions, along with an accoutrement of healthy sober activities for residents to enjoy. Robert Pfiefer, Sober College founder, notes, “Treatment providers have to work to rebuild and mitigate these weaknesses which can easily be achieved by helping young adults establish realistic positive life situations to immerse themselves in. Things like school, fitness, and emotional work re-regulate the brain in various ways.”

Learning and amusement may be the next program paradigm for the new wave of addiction treatment providers. “Innovative, fun and different” is how Pfiefer describes his invention. From rehabilitation to graduation, it’s a class act all the way.
