Just a brief thank you for Nick Roes' short but importantpiece in the May/June 2007 issue entitled “Seek a balanced approach to medication.” No topic could be more timely in the fast-moving world of medication-assisted treatment and recovery. As new medications arrive, we all must remember they are never the end in themselves. The individual must maintain choice; this is especially true for those seeking recovery from addiction.
As these new pharmacotherapies open possibilities, they also open new concerns and the need for serious reflection and understanding of what we are all about. We will use Dr. Roes' principles to guide us in our work. Michael T. Flaherty, PhD, Executive director, Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addictions, Pittsburgh
