Emmett R. Bishop, Jr., MD, medical director of outpatient services and program development at the Eating Recovery Center in Denver, last month received the Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp). Among his career accomplishments, Bishop played a pivotal role in establishing the professional certification for which the award is named.

Bishop, who has 30 years of experience in the provision of eating disorder treatment, founded the Eating Recovery Center in 2008. He served as the facility's medical director of adult services before moving over to outpatient services and program development.

Besides his clinical work, Bishop has conducted research in psychosomatic medicine, psychotropic medications and eating disorders. He is a sought-after consultant on psychological assessment of bariatric surgery patients.

Bishop received the award at the association's 2014 symposium in St. Petersburg, Fla. He is a past iaedp president and a longtime board member of the association.
