The Treatment Research Institute (TRI), a nonprofit research and development organization, was founded in 1991 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit in Pennsylvania. TRI’s core mission has been to apply research to improving substance abuse policies and programs. The organization is extremely well-regarded as a leader in translating developmental research into practical applications in the substance use arena. It is known as the "home" of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), one of the most widely utilized assessment tools in the field. Instruments developed by TRI are among the most utilized by clinicians, researchers and the justice system -  throughout the world

Concurrent with the effort to develop better tools, TRI's investigators and other staff have been significant thought leaders in evaluating the many practical barriers that prevent absorption of new instruments, methods and information into everyday use. Indeed, founding of the Treatment Research Institute was a purposeful attempt to both coordinate study of addiction science and practical application of that science to clinical and policy decision making. The organization remains deeply committed to finding practical, science-based approaches to addressing an array of addictions-related public health problems
