Father Martin’s Ashley’s process leading to this year’s Father Joseph C. Martin, SS Professional Excellence Award is differing from that of past years, in that the absence of Father Martin’s direct involvement with the award has led to a broader call for nominations from the field. Also, this year’s award will be presented in conjunction with the inaugural National Conference on Addiction Disorders (NCAD), to be held Sept. 8-11 in Washington, D.C. and produced by Vendome Group, publisher of Addiction Professional.
“It is only fitting that we open nominations for the award given in [Father Martin’s] name to all professionals who contribute to saving and changing the lives of those affected by chemical addiction,” says Father Mark Hushen, president and CEO of Father Martin’s Ashley in Havre de Grace, Maryland. “We are thrilled to have the larger forum of the NCAD conference with which to convey this important award.”
Past winners of the award, first given in 2003, include Ronald Hunsicker, Robert Ackerman, PhD, and Terence Gorski. Father Martin’s Ashley is emphasizing that all professionals who help alcoholics and addicts live a life in recovery, not just treatment providers, are eligible for this honor. An independent committee will evaluate the nominations and select the 2010 recipient.
Father Martin was a pioneer in 12-Step addiction education; his “Chalk Talk” lectures remain a staple in treatment programs and the larger recovery community, immortalized through a series of books, CDs and DVDs. Father Martin died in March 2009; he was the subject of an Addiction Professional cover story in the November 2008 issue, based on an interview conducted at his home.
Nominations for this year’s award must be received by midnight on June 1, 2010. For more information about the award, visit www.fathermartinsashley.org and click on “Referring Professionals.”
