One of the most potent and perpetuating constructs in both eating disorders and addictions is shame. Helping clients address shame and teaching them to allow for vulnerability and self-compassion is vital to the eventual mastery of one's own recovery process. This lecture will discuss the evidence base and research highlighting the importance of addressing shame and vulnerability throughout the recovery process in order to create lasting recovery. We will discuss the application to clients with eating disorders and/or addictions, with special emphasis on interventions and tools for the clinician.
Upon completion of this session attendees will be able to:
- Summarize recent research related to shame and addictions.
- Conceptualize a case for a client with an eating disorder and/or an addiction which addresses shame and vulnerability.
- Implement at least three interventions to address shame and vulnerability with clients.
*There is a $25 registration fee, but all attendees will receive a $25 American Express gift card at the conclusion of the event. Registration is required to attend; seating is limited.
