Washington, DC — The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) announced today that Faye J. Calhoun, D.P.S., has become Chairman of NACoA’s Board of Directors. Dr. Calhoun is a past Deputy Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) in the National Institutes of Health, and has been a member of the NACoA Board of Directors since retiring from NIAAA in 2006. She is currently Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Graduate Education and Research at North Carolina Central University in Durham NC.
"As our country continues to look for ways to reduce health care costs, NACoA is fortunate to have a nationally recognized scientific expert who is so familiar with research on children of alcoholics. She will help shape our agenda to provide programs necessary to protect and support them,” said NACoA Chairman Emeritus Donald Ian Macdonald, MD, former Administrator of the NIH Alcohol Drug and Mental Health Administration.
Prior to her position as NIAAA Deputy Director, Dr. Calhoun was Associate Director for Collaborative Research at NIAAA, a position that included leadership in the management and administration of the Institute, supervision of the Office of Collaborative Research (OCR) activities, and responsibility for fostering partnerships between the Institute and other government, non-profit, national and international organizations. She was responsible for the management of the Institute’s Center Grant Program, its Training Grants, the AIDS portfolio, the International Research and Training Programs, the Program to Address Health Disparities, Women’s Health Program, and the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Initiatives. She was also the Convener and leader of the Interagency Coordinating Committee on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Dr. Calhoun has received many prestigious recognitions for her work, including the 2005 DHHS Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service for outstanding teamwork with SAMHSA in addressing underage drinking issues with states, community-based and national organizations. She also received the Research Society on Alcoholism’s 2001 Seixas Award for Distinguished Service. She twice received the NIH Director’s Award (1994 and 1998).
"I am honored and proud to become Board Chair of such a critical organization,” Dr. Calhoun said. “The body of research on the impact of parental alcoholism and alcohol abuse on developing children, as well as the impact of parental drug use, is compelling. And it has been accumulating for over 30 years. NACoA bases its programs and training work on that research, and it translates it into useful products for school counselors, clergy, and others in positions to help affected children and families heal, recover, and lead healthy productive lives."
Other NACoA officers elected to serve with Dr. Calhoun are Vice Chairman Peter Palanca, MA, Executive Vice President of Chicago-based TASC-IL; Vice Chairman Stephanie Loebs, RN, Executive Director of Farley Center at Williamsburg; Secretary Judge Arthur Burnett, Sr., National Executive Director of the National African American Drug Policy Coalition, and Treasurer Sue R. Thau, MA, Legislative Consultant to Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America.
Carol B. Sisco, PhD, who preceded Dr. Calhoun as Chair, will remain as an active member of the Board focusing her efforts on strengthening NACoA’s resource development efforts.
The National Association for Children of Alcoholics, located in Rockville, MD, is a national membership and affiliate organization whose mission is “To eliminate the adverse impact of alcohol and drug use on children and families.” NACoA has been the leading voice for children and youth hurt by addiction in the family for over 27 years.
